Geography and Climate

 

Lake Wörth nestles peacefully amid the gentle rolling hills of the southern Gerlitzen and Karawanken mountains and stretches across an area of 19.39 km2 in the Klagenfurt Basin.

 

Protected by the effects of adverse weather conditions, the region is already pleasantly warm in April and water temperatures exceed 25°C during the summer months, making Lake Wörth one of the warmest lakes in the Alps.

As a result, even the most faint-hearted swimmers will take the plunge in the lake here.

 

Lake Wörth is divided into three basins. Along its banks, pretty bays and peninsulas have formed, which are assigned to the seven communities of Klagenfurt on Lake Wörth, Krumpendorf, Pörtschach, Techelsberg, Maria Wörth, Reifnitz and, on the far west, Velden.

 

In the mornings, the first elongated rays of sunshine beam into your room across the breadth of the western basin to wake you up gently for the start of a beautiful summer’s day.

Nostalgia & history

 

In 1881, a large fire destroyed many of the old buildings in Velden.

 

As a result, an impressive settlement of villas and mansions, as well as bathhouses and boathouses grew up along the shores of Velden. Their building style was influenced by Viennese architects and became known as “Wörthersee architecture”.

 

This visually attractive symbiosis of architecture and impressive natural surroundings led to a number of films and television films being made here.

 

Steamships from the golden age of the Sommerfrische” (summer holiday in the country) are still in operation today. A trip across the lake on the “Thalia” can whisk you back to the romance of the good old days.
